HPG R1 IMPACT TESTER: Did the lens hold?
A breach charge, a fastball and a grinding wheel. Three different industries, one identical failure point.
Eye injuries do not announce themselves. A fragment leaves a door faster than anyone can react to. A ball arrives faster than a blink. A grinding wheel throws swarf that finds the one gap in the protection. In every case the wearer had eye protection on, and only one thing mattered: did the lens hold?
When it does not, the next document in the story is usually a legal file, and a line marked fail against ANSI Z87.1 is not one anyone wants attached to their brand.
Three questions worth asking first
Which level should your product comply to? The minimum that gets you certified, or a level that puts you ahead of your closest competitor?
What is stopping you getting there?
And is a thicker lens really the answer?
The third catches most people out. A thicker lens will often pass, but the wearer feels the weight by the third hour and pushes the eyewear up onto their head, which protects nobody. That balance is a question of material, lens geometry, base curve and how much energy the frame absorbs. It is rarely solved by adding millimetres.

Motorcycle visors sit in the same territory. ECE 22.06, mandatory across Europe and forty other countries since January 2024, fires a 6 mm steel ball at the visor at 60 m/s, roughly a stone thrown up at motorway speed. Different industry, same physics.
ISO and EN high velocity impact is tested at 45 m/s. The HPG R1 reaches 220 m/s as standard, and 350 m/s with the speed enhancement, which is what military combat eye protection to MIL-PRF-32432A demands.
That headroom lets you certify to the standard you need today, and find out where your product actually fails rather than only that it passed. That is the difference between meeting a minimum and knowing you are better than the product next to you on the shelf.

Worth noting on the Australian line: AS 16321.1 is new and is set to replace AS/NZS 1337.1, but the two are running in parallel right now. If you sell into Australia, that means two sets of requirements on the same product at the same time.
